ABOUT THE EVENT
Reborn in the Midwest around 2005 as Gravel Grinders, gravel events harken back to these early days of cycling, creating a new buzz in the cycling world as cyclists sought out new challenges. Following the US, other continents adopted the concept 10 years later and the gravel market is booming worldwide.
Targeting elites but also masters and amateurs, these events are long-distance bike races on mostly unpaved roads and paths with an adventurous and often challenging route through nature. Organizers are frequently switching to the format to deal with the difficult process of obtaining approvals to hold road races on public roads. It is the hybrid form of cycling that combines elements of mountain biking, cyclocross and road events.
The UCI Gravel World Series is a series of UCI-sanctioned races held around the world. Around 30 qualifying events will qualify the top 25% in each age group for the UCI Gravel World Championships, where the champions are awarded the coveted UCI rainbow jersey.
The UCI Gravel World Series is based on the highly successful UCI Gran Fondo World Series, which was launched in 2011 as a road qualifying series for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships with events of up to 8,000 riders and an annual World Championships with 3,000 participants. The UCI Gravel World Series has quickly evolved into a high-level elite gravel competition.
The greatest success of gravel racing is the discovery of new roads hidden in the countryside, where riders of all levels, from Worldtour elite level to amateurs, can share the same routes during these mass participation events.
The concept of the UCI Gravel World Series is focusing on very competitive riders, from the Pro Elite level to older riders who still want to compete at a high level at an older age, but also on fun riders who like to keep fit and finish the event.
In partnership with renowned Belgian sports marketing agency Golazo, which also manages the UCI Gran Fondo World Series, the UCI has created these Gravel World Series. This partnership will be responsible for the overall organisation, coordination and marketing aspects of the UCI Gravel World Series qualifying events.
Gravel cycling has a long and rich history, dating back to the early days of cycling. When cycling racing first emerged around 150 years ago, most of the world's roads were unpaved, with only city centres having cobblestones and sidewalks. Extensive paving outside of urban centres didn't become common until the 20th century. This meant that the original cyclists were essentially gravel cyclists, navigating the dirt and gravel roads that connected cities.
